orange paper roses

My paper flower journey so far

Hello I’m Sharon, welcome to my website and studio

My love of flowers has taken me on a twisty road. From garden design to fresh flower floristry and artificial flowers to finally discovering what really inspires me and makes me happy - paper flowers!

I love to make bouquets, buttonholes and arrangements for weddings. To help couples fulfil their dreams for their special day and create beautiful pieces. But I’m also passionate about the natural world and the effect we are having on it.

Whilst pondering the negative environmental impact many commercial fresh and artificial flowers have. And at the same time wanting to be more creative myself, I felt the need for a change.

Could I make the flowers myself and be eco-friendly at the same time? With a little research an idea was born - handmade flowers, made with plant dyed tissue paper and flour based glue! All the materials would be sustainable and the flowers compostable at the end of their life. The ideal way to create beautiful flowers that last and don’t harm the planet.

So my new adventure begins

I have been researching and experimenting with different plant materials to see which are suitable for dyeing tissue paper. Unlike fabric which is often simmered in the dye, tissue paper is just placed in a cold dye bath for a short time. Some traditionally used plants don’t produce colour well this way, but I love experimenting, trying new leaves, barks and fruit.

Making flowers with tissue paper instead of the usual crepe paper also has it’s restrictions. Tissue paper makes lovely light petals, but it doesn’t stretch and therefore it's harder to produce a cup shape petal. I have overcome this by cutting and glueing the base of the petal together to form a slight cup. This has allowed me to design and make three different types of roses, tulips, Alstroemerias and Delphiniums so far.

I have also been collecting different leaves and grasses to see which will keep their shape and colour well when dried. I love wild grasses, the variety you can find just growing along the verges is wonderful. But I’m also growing a few ornamental grasses in my garden and cutting some fern leaves from our woodland. The colour green is difficult to produce as a natural dye so the dried plant material not only adds texture and movement to bouquets and arrangements but also a realistic touch of green.

The plant dyes produce delicate pastel tones. And together with the subtle greens from the dried foliage give the bouquets I create a natural feel and lightness. The paper flowers will last well beyond your special day, but they are fully compostable when they reach the end of their lives.

Lovely words from lovely couples

Here are just a few of the wonderful reviews I have received in the past for my fresh and artificial wedding flowers.

We met Sharon at a wedding fayre and immediately knew she would be the right person to create our wedding flowers. She took the time to find out about us, our wedding and all the ideas we had as well as the design of my dress to ensure that everything came together beautifully. I would recommend Sharon to everyone, she is a wonderful lady, very friendly and will go above and beyond to ensure your flowers are perfect and exactly what you dreamed off. Thank you so much. x    Victoria and Chris, Somerset

Stop looking for florists you have found the only one that's worth contacting! Sharon did her research into exactly what feel I wanted for the wedding, and how much of an impact I wanted the flowers to be. The flowers were designed beautifully. I had so many compliments on them, they blew my mind and my husband didn't stop talking about them for weeks (I don't think he's ever noticed flowers before!)    Rachel and Francis, Somerset

Absolutely amazing service from start to finish. Sharon's designs and ideas were brilliant! The finished bouquets and buttonholes were incredible, you couldn't tell that they were silk and not real flowers. Everyone loved them and best of all, they will last forever! Sharon also helped with our table decorations, which were real flowers. She stayed and helped set up, which was amazing. Can't thank her enough for her hard work! 🙂   Elisse and Charlie, Hampshire

Sharon is uniquely creative & created my beautiful wedding bouquet & husbands buttonhole. Her attention to detail is fantastic & my bouquet will be a beautiful memento forever. Thank you   Becca and Paul, Dorset

We had so many compliments on the day as everyone thought they were real! When we told them they were silk, they just couldn’t get over the realistic details and the best part is they still look as perfect today 🙂   Kara and Matt, Dorset

Absolutely amazing flowers! Sharon was great in picking out flowers which complemented my colour scheme. I showed Sharon images of bouquets I liked and she created the perfect bouquets and button holes for my wedding. Would highly recommend!  Melissa and Chris, Somerset

I can't recommend Cooper Floral Design enough. Sharon listened to every single request I had and I felt she went above and beyond to help me achieve exactly what I wanted with my flowers. Planning a wedding can be stressful, but sorting the flowers was completely stress free!  Sarah and Mike, Derbyshire
